ROADMAP TEMPLATES

While working as a technical writer at the Office of IT, the leadership of the organization began to place an emphasis on having roadmap templates for products and services. The Senior Product Manager for CES schools reached out to me and asked me to create a roadmap template that he could use to get information about a product at a glance.

I determined what fields were required for the roadmap and then played around in several programs before deciding that Microsoft Word would be the best for this project. This project strengthened my formatting skills as I fit lots of different information onto one page. I also used different styles to draw attention to the sections that provided the most value.

Since there was the potential for multiple people to be editing these templates, I used rich text boxes to control which fields could be edited by the user. This was my first experience with rich text boxes, so it was interesting to learn about all their capabilities. This was also my first time creating a template, so I had to figure out how to save the template in a format that could be shared across the organization.

The roadmap also sparked a conversation with the process team at the organization about how the template that could be used for other teams. I left the Office of IT right as this project was beginning, and so I briefed a different technical writer on the project and decisions I made.
